At 6pm, the Lamontville community gathered for a high intensity BOXit class. The stage was shared by SUNfit instructors and the remarkable SandileSimanane, a 29 year old Life Saver dedicated to changing lives through fitness. Shortly after he began his fitness journey 2 years ago, he decidedLamontville needed its own Virgin Active – an initiative dedicated to keeping the community fit for free. Together with members of the community, he began holding evening fitness classes at the township’s municipal hall.
Just over 100 fitness-enthused women, men and children gathered at the town hall to get their dose of SUNfit. Also in attendance were various media houses and the passionateSUNfit team. Lisa Raleigh – fitness and wellness expert and SUNfit founder – cut the ribbon with the community, commencing the launch of the first-ever free SUNFit venue in Lamontville. People poured in from the street to investigate the vibe, and the hall was filled with smiling faces, all ready to get moving. Check out Lisa’s ‘superselfie’ @LisaRaleighSA on Twitter, capturing the vibrant energy of the evening.
SUNfit has been offering the public free fitness since 2006, and classes have bloomed from one venue and one weekly class into three venues, with classes running six times a week. This launch is a pivotal starting block in addressing an important need in South Africa, with more SUNfit community venues set to launch in 2015. By 2020 the hope is to offer SUNfit classes in every province, town and community nationwide, making wellness an accessible right for all.
