The Lumineers’ world tour culminated with a phenomenal three sold-out shows in South Africa. Thousands of fans packed both venues to capacity with more than 10 000 music-lovers gathering over the 4th & 5th December at Kirstenbosch Gardens and 15 000 fans joining the band at Jo’burg's Emmarentia Dam on the 6th of December.
In Jo’burg, SA local and Berlin based street performer Alice Phoebe Lou took her charming, barefooted, and soulful performance to attendees with her thoughtful insights into each of her songs and her wonderfully powerful vocals. Both cities were fortunate enough to enjoy Durban locals Majozi who energised the audiences with their spirited and engaging performance. Dear Reader, the final local act to take to the Jo’burg stage, performed an emotional and moving set.
The highly anticipated international act The Lumineers owned both stages with their infectious style of folk music! Across both cities the boot-stomping, guitar-strumming, piano-thumping music that has made them famous around the world got music lovers up on their feet, dancing barefoot on the grass and belting back their must sing-along hits like ‘Ho Hey’, ‘Stubborn Live’ and ‘Submarines’.
Asking the fans to put down their phones to be fully present during their performance the fans replied with overwhelming appreciation and excitement. As if the thousands gathered weren’t enjoying themselves enough, Wesley Schultz, Jeremiah Fraites and Stelth Ulvang made their way into the crowd to perform amongst their overjoyed fans. Lost in a sea of clapping, swaying folk enthusiasts their upbeat, energy driven classics won over both Cape Town and Jo’burg enthusiasts, leaving the crowds begging for more.
Of course all great events have great partners and these concerts were no exception. Whether you were lounging on a hammock, enjoying the photo booth or winning an LG G3 Beat smartphone, Virgin Mobile made sure you would never forgot your Lumineers experience. With Nick Hammon and Stephanie B on hand as our MC’s 5FM gave away awesome prizes and Jose Cuervo got the Cuervolution started with their fun lucha libre themed photo frames and bar.
