West Cycle Tour set for the West Rand in September
Words & Photos: Cycling South Africa
The West Rand District Municipality and district’s local municipalities are proud to present a new cycling event for Johannesburg this September. In association with Cycling South Africa and Zen One Productions, The West Rand has added a prestigious one-day road race to their Go West Festival for 2013, on 29 September.
The festival, which starts on 20 September and traditionally culminates with a music concert on 28 September at Coronation Park, will now have a cycle race on Sunday 29 September 2013. The event, which will cater for all riders, offers a 144km Elite Men’s race with rolling road closure, and a 105km event with full road closure, starting and finishing in Krugersdorp.
Elite Men will transverse all 4 district municipalities that constitute the West Rand, namely Krugersdorp, Magaliesdorp, Carletonville and Randfontein (bypassing Westonaria). The Elites will enjoy full road closure up until they turn away from the shorter distance route, and again when they re-join alongside the shorter distance in the last 15km. The shorter 105km route will follow the Elite Men course, but will turn onto the R41 toward Randfontein.
In a unique setting, the Elite Men will finish the last 15km along the same route as the shorter route, but on the opposite side of the road, thereby allowing the social riders a chance to witness some serious racing amongst some of our country’s top professional teams.
After a few rolling hills en route to the Magaliesburg, the course is relatively flat and there will be hot-spot prizes for both the Elite Men and Elite Women, with increasing incentives per hot-spot. This will be in addition to a healthy prize fund of just over R260K across the board. The prize money has been determined by UCI categorisation in preparation for the 2014 edition.
The route is ideal for cyclists of any level of fitness, presenting no serious climbs or technical descents, and the flat-and-fast nature of the course will allow for all levels of cyclists to enjoy their day out. Entry fee is R250.00 and for riders who are not members of Cycling SA, a day license fee of R35.00 will be levied.
Online entries are open, and you can enter now by visiting this web link: http://csams.cyclingsa.com/enter-an-event/road/2013---road---go-west-cyc...
The partnership between the West Rand District Municipality and Cycling SA falls directly into Cycling SA’s strategic planning to continually introduce international events into South Africa. Although the event will not carry UCI category status for 2013, future versions will be applied for both the Elite Men and Elite Women races, as we embark on a series of events to realise the Cycling SA 20/20 vision across all disciplines.
