Trees for Zambia 2014

Greenpop launches its 3rd annual Trees for Zambia project – a 3-week festival of action where they bring trees, environmental education, collaborative eco-projects, and a massive good time to Livingstone, Zambia!

Trees for Zambia 2014 (15 June to 6 July 2014)
Join an exciting reforestation and eco-education festival of action at the mighty Victoria Falls! Just like in previous years, Greenpop will be planting a few thousand trees and spreading eco-education in an effort to fight the drastic deforestation in the Livingstone area – and you can be part of it! This greening social enterprise offers you the chance to join them for one, two or three weeks to plant trees, educate children, learn about environmental issues yourself through a range of lectures and workshops, enjoy brilliant live music, and explore this beautiful corner of Africa!

Zambia has seen rampant deforestation in recent decades, mainly as a result of bad land management, slash and burn farming methods, unsustainable logging and tree cutting for charcoal. According to the UN-REDD programme, Zambia has approximately 50 million hectares of forest, with an estimated deforestation rate of 250,000 to 300,000 hectares per year. In an article published in The Zambia Daily Mail in July 2012 the Director of the Zambian Forestry Department, Mrs Anne Masinja, says, “Management of the forest has been a challenge following massive deforestation due to charcoal burning, unsustainable agricultural and unsustainable land use practices. It is a pity that most people do not realise the harm they are causing to the environment due to cutting of trees. Loss of forests contributes as much as 30 percent of global greenhouse-gas emissions each year and this is very dangerous, we need to do something to stop this.” http://www.greenpop.org/projects/trees-for-zambia/

Participation Programme Project
Creative types, strong leaders, and eco-warriors with big ideas and skills to share – this project is perfect for you!

After two successful Trees for Zambia projects, Greenpop is ready to add a very interesting element to what they dub their ‘festival of action’. They want to start transforming Trees For Zambia into a large-scale collaborative project where environmentally minded people from around the world can share new ideas, solutions and lessons in the field of sustainability. Practical hands-on workshops will be offered and innovative ideas presented.

To do this they are focusing on participation and are looking for innovative participants who would like to host workshops, initiate projects or present on environmental issues in Livingstone during our Trees for Zambia Project.

Earth Fest
To reward planters for their hard work during the week, the organization always kicks off the weekend with a Friday night concert, featuring talented artists from all over southern Africa.

However, during the middle weekend of Trees for Zambia, Greenpop will host Earth Fest; a TREEmendous celebration weekend. They’ll add fun environmental exhibits and inspiring knowledge sharing, followed (of course, as the fun factor is very important for Greenpop) by a rocking party with exceptional live music. As a Trees for Zambia attendee, you’ll be able to be part of this fun weekend if your dates align – Earth Fest is 27th/28th June 2014.
Cape Town Launch Party at TwentyFifty!

Trees for Zambia 2014 will be officially launched during an after-work event at TwentyFifty, above Truth CoffeeCult at 36 Buitenkant Street in Cape Town, from 6 pm to 9 pm. During this evening, Greenpop will present Trees for Zambia's history and objectives, films on the project will be screened, and past participants will share their experiences. And of course there will be great live music, delicious drinks and snacks, and happy vibes.

Tickets and Trees for Fees
For information about tickets to attend Trees for Zambia for 1, 2 or 3 weeks, please email - there are group discounts too!
Additionally, Greenpop offers a cool way to come to the festival through raising trees - Trees for Fees programme! This allows you to fundraise for trees and get a discount on your event fee. The more trees you raise, the more discount you get. If you do well, you could come for free! It’s easy - ask your friends, family, colleagues, schoolmates to buy a tree each for the project and help you get there to plant them too. (Please note that the project fee does not include getting there.) They’ll set you up with your own URL and all the tools you need as well as some cool ideas for tree raising!
