Cape Town will welcome some 35 000 cyclists to the Mother City on Sunday, 9 March to participate in the 37th Cape Argus Pick n Pay Momentum Cycle Tour.

The annual Cycle Tour takes place around the Cape Peninsula on the second Sunday in March each year and masses of both local and international cyclists will line up on Hertzog Boulevard to participate in the iconic event.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, organisers of the annual event, is encouraging participants and spectators alike to use public transport as far as possible on event weekend.

Operations Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, Renée Jordaan, says: “We would like to urge all individuals, whether it is spectators, participants and others associated with the event, to use the trains and the Integrated Rapid Transport system to get to the start area on Cycle Tour Race Day. Parking is extremely limited, but with the assistance of the City of Cape Town, Metrorail and MyCiTi Bus services, we have increased public transport services available on event day to help cyclists and their bikes get to the starting line safely and on time.”

Jordaan says that, although not all riders will be able to make use of public transport, they are encouraged to carpool to the start area to help reduce traffic congestion on the day. “Hosting 35 000 cyclists, as well as spectators at the start line on Race Day is a mammoth task and we’d like to ensure that any traffic issues and congestions are alleviated as far as possible.”

Metrorail will be selling train tickets at the Cape Argus Momentum Lifecycle Expo at R40 each for cyclists who wish to use the train to commute to the start. The ticket allows cyclists to accessthe last two carriages of the train along with their bikes. The trains will operate according to the normal Sunday timetable, with the addition of a train leaving Simon’s Town at 07h01am and arriving at Cape Town station at 08h09, as well as a train leaving Cape Town station at 18h10 and arriving in Simon’s Town at 19h20. Riders are encouraged to visit the Metrorail website at www.metrorail.co.za for the regular train schedule.

To further ensure that all cyclists and supporters can get to the start and finish lines quickly and efficiently, the City of Cape Town has increased MyCiTi bus services in and around the Cape Town area on Race Day. Free MyCiTi buses will run every 10 minutes from Thibault Square Station to the Cape Town Stadium Terminal and back for cyclists and spectators, from 6am to 6pm. Cyclists will also be allowed to transport their bicycles on all MyCiTi buses on Cycle Tour Race Day.
