The Vulture viewing hide overlooks a 'vulture restaurant' on the site of a breeding colony of 120 Cape Vultures. With a threatened global population of just 8,000 Cape Vultures, this is a very significant colony.
It is located close to the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal and has already proven to be a highlight on the local tourist map for visitors of all ages and interests, birders and photographers alike. This is a place where Oribi buck and Black-backed Jackal may also be encountered.
The vulture site is a conservation initiative of Birdlife Trogons Bird Club whereby all monies received are classified as donations to the project and are used to ensure the continued protection of this important breeding site. The official launch takes place on the 8th February however it is a closed affair due to the need to limit foot traffic on the site, given the need to observe conservation sensitivity.
All visitors are welcome after the launch however advance booking is essential as your booking allows for exclusive use of the hide for the day. 2 hour site visits (excluding use of the hide) are also available.
