Totalsports Challenge supports Yomelelani Pre-School Care Centre

According to Chanelle Nxodo, General Manager Yomelelani Pre-School Care Centre, four members of the United Church in Hermanus saw a need for a safe place to care for children during the day while parents were at work in the Kwasa Kwasa area. “They identified the Hou Moed Centre as the venue and submitted funding proposals to the church and other organisations in the Netherlands. In 2004 the Yomelelani Pre-School Care Centre opened its doors, accommodating 40 children. Five years later we added a third classroom and as a result we now accommodate 60 children. An after care was established in 2011 at a primary school in Zwelihle, accommodating 45 children. We are very honoured to be the official charity of the Totalsports Challenge. It is an important event in the Overstrand area, especially in Kleinmond. By being part of this event, people will learn about the work that we do in the Zwelihle community and enable us to render a better service to the children. It will also uplift the level of education we offer the children,” says Nxodo.

Supporting the Yomelelani Pre-School Care Centre was suggested to the organisers of the Totalsports Challenge presented by Liberty Medical Scheme and REHIDRAT® SPORT by Solomzi Madikane, Director Economic Development Overstrand Municipality Hermanus. “There are many deserving charities needing support in this area,” says Madikane. “Each of these charities addresses a key socio-economic challenge in making the lives of people better. Childhood development is important to the municipality’s effort to grow the local economy. Developing young minds at an early age can be critical in developing skills in the right direction. The Yomelelani Pre-School Care Centre addresses
local educational difficulties sometimes caused by the lack of parental involvement. This is complemented by recreational activities such as sport which can contribute positively in developing young minds”.

Event information

Starting in Gordon’s Bay on Saturday, 11 January 2014 participants can choose between the 7-disclipline Totalsports Challenge or the 4-discipline Totalsports Terra Firma Challenge. If taking on more than one discipline seems too daunting at this stage, there is an option to enter a team instead.

Venue: Start - Gordon’s Bay (Beach Front)
End - Kleinmond (Beach Front)

Event: Totalsports Challenge – 12km surfski, 1.5km swim, 50km road bike (from Gordon’s Bay to Kleinmond), 13km road run, 13km K1 canoe, 25km mountain bike and finally a 9km beach run
Format: Athletes can enter individually or in two, three or seven member teams

Event: Totalsports Terra Firma Challenge - 50km road bike (from Gordon’s Bay to Kleinmond), 13km road run, 25km mountain bike and 9km beach run.
Format: Athletes can enter individually or in two or four member teams
