THE WORLD RETURNS TO LONDON
On the 4th and 7th August 2012, the sport of Triathlon changed forever. Front pages of international newspapers contained images of Hyde Park and two of the most dramatic, noisy and spectacular races of any Olympic Games, in any sport.
The vision for the Games was legacy and ensuring that future generations would continue to be inspired by world class sporting events and performances in London. On the 11 – 15 September 2013, London hosts the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final using an identical course and venue to that used in the London 2012 Olympic Games. Expected 5,000 athletes from all over the world will fight for world championship titles.
This week in September will offer everybody the opportunity to get involved and to experience the spirit of the Olympic Games. While the World Championship races require athletes to qualify via their home federation, the Open Age Group Races on Saturday, 14 September 2013 are open to everyone.
The ITU World Triathlon Series features world-class events all around the globe in which elite triathletes compete annually to become the ITU World Champion. Each year the Series finishes with a Grand Final as the most important race of the season and as the event where World Championship titles for Elite, U23, Juniors, Paratriathletes and Age Groupers are awarded. In 2013, London has the honour of hosting the Grand Final on 11-15 September.
The PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final in London will be the pinnacle of triathlon competition across the globe. The event will bring together athletes of all levels, from future stars to Olympic medallists to weekend warriors. London will offer significant media coverage, including live broadcast distribution and the event has the greatest cumulative prize money in triathlon ($270,000 USD). The Grand Final creates an instant economic impact by bringing in more than 5,000 international tourists to London, consisting of over 3,000 international competitors, support teams, officials, family and friends. A further 2,000 open age group participants are also expected. London will also welcome the annual ITU Congress with delegates from 135 countries scheduled for 16 September 2013.
