The Cape Town J&B Met at the Kenilworth Race Course
The haute couture equestrian event of the year is ‘Made to Conquer’ in 2014
As South Africa’s most celebrated outdoor social and sporting event of the year, the J&B Met will, for the 37th time, merge equestrian prowess with high fashion at the Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town on Saturday, 1 February 2014.
This year’s theme, ‘Made to Conquer’, encourages the well-heeled to take charge on the grounds and dress for victory in unforgettable stylish, sophisticated and glamorous garb. After all, while tradition and pageantry may constitute the core of the historical horse race, the J&B Met is just as much about ground-breaking haute couture that challenges conventions and celebrates bold attitudes. Or, more simply, it’s about decadence, debauchery and ‘who’ you’re wearing.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2014 J&B MET AT THE KENILWORTH RACECOURSE
EQUESTRIAN EVENT OF THE SEASON: Billed as South Africa’s most prestigious horse racing event, the J&B Met offers equestrian enthusiasts the opportunity to see 16 of the country’s finest thoroughbreds test their mettle in nine races and compete for a stake of R2.5 million in the main event. Bid on buxom chestnuts or strapping dapple greys and schmooze with the rich and famous in the summer sun.
GLITZ, GLAMOUR AND GALLOPING: Apart from witnessing the fine specimens on the track gallop to the finishing line, regular Joes can rub shoulders with the movers and shakers of the horse racing industry at this esteemed sporting event. What’s more, this summertime favourite also sees high-profile celebrities come out of the shadows to enjoy a day of fun and fashion in the Cape Town sun; spot your favourite soapie star, presenter or fashionista!
THE MOST ELEGANT COUPLE: “Dress victorious” and take part in the annual highlight, the Most Elegant Couple competition. This year, the J&B Met is teaming up with SABC 3 talk show Expresso and its presenters to host a pre-event fashion parade on the regular morning programme. This means that potential participants can strut their stuff on national TV prior to the racing event in the hopes of winning a spot in to compete for the coveted title on the day. Even if you don’t feature on the telly though, you can still win the contest, which due to popularity and the increase in participants will take place with a pre-judging process. Couples are encouraged to arrive early, and fashion spotters from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology will hand out invitations to glam pairs to enter the pre-judging phase. Judges will whittle down the list and carefully select 16 finalists from hundreds of entrants. Winners stand a chance of winning a range of prizes, including products and vouchers from Elizabeth Arden, Carlton Hair, Sunglass Hut, Mangwanani Spa, GrandWest Casino, Cavendish Square and many more. If you’re stuck on what to wear or how to “dress victorious”, visit the J&B Met’s Pinterest page for inspiration.
