Mountain Warrior Trail Run Routes sure to impress
Words: NEWSPORT MEDIA | Photos: Chris Hitchcock
The annual Mountain Warrior Trail Run Festival returns to Rustenberg Wine Estate (Outside Stellenbosch) on Saturday, 31 August 2013 and Sunday, 01 September 2013. Trail running enthusiasts can look forward to experiencing the beautiful slopes and contours of the Stellenbosch and Simonsberg Mountains as well as a major section of the Greater Simonsberg Conservancy.
According to Pieter Du Plessis, Race Director, runners will get to enjoy sections on route that are accessible for that weekend only. “I have a serious soft spot for Jonkershoek and Rustenberg. Personally I believe that it has to be the next best thing to heaven. The routes have undergone minor changes from last year with the introduction of a little more single track, while the shorter routes have been made slightly easier. Our wish is for runners to go home with sore legs, a sense of accomplishment and spectacular memories that will bring them back in 2014. Runners are encouraged not to forget their cameras. Rustenberg will be closing its doors to new events, so this will be the only opportunity to experience its ultimate beauty and serenity,” says Du Plessis.
Route Information:
Day One / Saturday, 31 August 2013
38km Jonkershoek SKY RUN / 09h00 / R 420
Ideal for very fit athletes, this route is great preparation for the Otter Run. In total participants run 10km on jeep track and 28km on single trail. It’s exceptionally technical in some places and very easy in other places.
Runners will witness unbelievable beauty running on the skyline of the Jonkershoek Mountains.
15km Botmaskop Traverse / 09h30 / R 250
This route favours the “adventurous at heart” runner that is looking for a reasonable challenge. It’s quite a difficult 15km route. Starting with a 5km climb, the route includes the infamous Botmaskop Traverse and a technical decent. The last 6km features a very nice downhill.
Day Two / Sunday, 01 September 2013
25km Simonsberg Challenge / 08h00 / R 220
This route is ideal for all runners in search of a nice run beyond a 21km trail. The route is somewhat challenging, but enjoyable.
12km Barlow Trail / 08h30 / R 150
Ideal for all runners, the terrain is very similar to that of the 25km route, but features less climbs. Ultimately it’s just a really nice run.
5km Rustenberg Fun Run / 09h00 / R 80
This route is ideal for runners that take the time to enjoy the scenery. The route consists mainly of jeep track. Look forward to a flat, easy, scenic run.
Special Offer:
Runners wishing to take part in both the long distances on Saturday and Sunday can enter the Mountain Warrior Challenge at a discounted rate of R550. The Mountain Warrior Challenge will feature
