Boarding on Land
The Quiksnow SA Snowboard Championships have concluded in near-perfect conditions at the Afriski Resort in the heart of Lesotho’s Maluti mountain range. Resort staff have worked tirelessly preparing a course that meets international standards, resulting in several pro’s from Europe and the US attending the event, including 2011 Quiksnow champion Jojo Krivec from Slovenia. He was in fine form despite only recently resuming riding after a 5 month layoff to recuperate from surgery on his shoulder and successfully defended his title.
The battle for the South African championship was a fierce one between multiple SA champion Marcin Jekot (34) from Umdloti, defending SA champ Luke Dutton (16) from Durban and young dark horse Dean Van Greunen (16) from Johannesburg. The format in the...
On the 4th and 5th of August 2012 the fastest downhill skateboarders from around South Africa will all be in Pretoria to compete for the title KING OF THE FORT. 2012 will be the third year that First Nature has hosted this gravity racing event. 2011 saw a significantly larger field of racers than 2010 and this year looks to be even bigger with over 50 riders entered already and there is still a week to go!
The racing at King of the Fort is always intense with most heats being won in the last two corners. These last two corners are in close proximity to the finish line offering a fun-filled and exhilarating experience for the spectators. The race is set on the road leading down from Fort Schanskop which is situated inside the Voortrekker Monument Reserve, rife with natural...
There are only a few days left until South Africa’s premier snowboarding event takes place at Afriski in the Maluti mountains. The resort's park shapers have been working around the clock to prepare the most varied and challenging snow park in Quiksnow’s 8 year history. Riders have been feeling out both the terrain and their competitors in several warmup contests this season in preparation for the crown jewel event of the season that will get underway with qualifying rounds on August 3 and the finals on August 4. A great winter so far has set the stage for a showdown in epic African snow conditions.
Quiksnow is really two contests in one. While the title of SA National Champion goes to the highest placed South African in each division, the title of Quiksnow champion is open to...
While the rest of the country grumbles about the Winter cold and pulls on yet another sweater, a cadre of committed men and women are rubbing their hands together in glee, not an attempt to warm them up. South African snowboarders countrywide are preparing for the imminent Quiksnow Slopestyle contest happening at Afriski on August 3 in the heart of Lesotho’s Maluti Mountains, a mere 6 hour drive from Johannesburg or Durban.
A flurry of recent cold snaps has resulted in what most agree has been the best snowfall in the last decade, boding well for the upcoming contest when SA will crown new Mens and Womens champions. This is augmented by Afriski recently doubling their snowmaking capabilities. Headline sponsor Quiksilver plans on giving local boardriders a contest to rival...
When you hear people talk about skiing, scenes of idyllic, snow-covered villages in the Alps, kids building snowmen and happy families carving their way down crowded, hard-packed pistes come to mind. Your friends tell you how a good overnight snowfall makes the post Après ski blues feel a little more manageable, but after a few turns in the tracked out powder you think to yourself, is this as good as it gets?
One of the highlights of this year's Mr Price Pro Ballito Beach Festival has undoubtedly been the inaugural parkour/ free running event which sees athletes harness elements of martial arts and acrobatics to deliver spectacular performances and show-stopping stunt work. This is the first free running event of its kind in South Africa which utilizes a purpose-built course. The finals for the skateboarding, BMX and parkour have all been moved to Saturday at 11h30, 12h30 and 14h30, respectively with the winners participating in exhibition events on Sunday (8 July). All of the extreme sports action is happening in the festival area above Willards Beach. Please see below for profiles on the Sabotage Elite team. All of them are available for media interviews and photo opportunities.

It all started with a call from my friend Hugo, “Check your email - you will not believe it!” I did as ordered and at first did not understand one word of it.
